The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine

The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg is part of a national effort within medical research and the Centre has been established in collaboration with Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, County Region in West Sweden, Astra Zeneca and the University of Gothenburg. WCMTM in Gothenburg will focus on molecular medicine aspects of metabolic and degenerative diseases, neuroscience, inflammation and cancer in a coordinated program to strengthen translational research by recruitment of young scientists.

In the present call we search for strong scientists who will be given the opportunity to combine excellent research within metabolic or degenerative diseases, neuroscience, inflammation or cancer with clinical residency within a relevant specialty and pursue research of 50% in up to four years. The successful candidates will be provided with a generous support package including funding for two positions (postdoctoral associates, PhD students or corresponding) as well as support for expenditures for up to four years.

Within the program the successful applicant is expected to develop full potential as leading independent scientist in a flourishing academic environment with unique connections to infrastructures at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, University of Gothenburg and AstraZeneca in Gothenburg. About the position

We are seeking highly motivated researchers with demonstrated potential for creativity and excellence in the areas metabolic or degenerative diseases, neuroscience, inflammation or cancer.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate a strong research program and start a new and independent research group that adds value to the on-going research at the University of Gothenburg and WCMTM. In addition to manage research of high international quality the successful candidate will participate in graduate and undergraduate teaching at the University of Gothenburg and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. An additional requirement is the ability to teach in Swedish and/or English. A further requirement is active participation in collaborative research and exchange programmes across the network of Wallenberg Centres in Molecular Medicine in Lund, Linköping and Umeå as well as with Science for Life Laboratories in Stockholm/Uppsala. The successful candidate is expected to actively apply for external funding.

The successful candidate will work as Resident physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital within specialty relevant for metabolic or degenerative diseases, neuroscience, inflammation or cancer. The position will be combined with 50% research time in up to four years.

Qualifications

We are seeking physicians with a doctoral degree and strong research merits within the present areas. Priority will be given to candidates with a PhD degree completed no more than seven years prior to the deadline of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to seven years is given equal priority if special circumstances exist such as parental leave or clinical employment. Swedish license to practise medicine is mandatory. For international applicants, an approved medical exam according to Swedish standard is required and also language skills in Swedish at the level C1. More specifically, the successful candidate should have a documented track record of translational oriented research related to metabolic or degenerative diseases, neuroscience, inflammation or cancer.

The research activities of the successful candidate must fit within the broader portfolio of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine.

Evalauation

The candidates will be evaluated as follows:
1.) The applicant’s scientific skills and the scientific quality of the project
2.) Pedagogic and administrative skills to initiate interdisciplinary cooperation, ability to interact with the community and ability to lead an independent research group.

Particular focus will be on assessment of 1.

The evaluation of the scientific skills and quality will devote particular emphasis to the level of independently performed research within metabolic or degenerative diseases, neuroscience, inflammation or cancer. Scientific assessment will be based upon documented publications of a high scientific quality and grants achieved in national/international competition. The evaluation of pedagogic skills will pay attention to planning and implementation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Evaluation is also made on the basis of documented administrative skills including leadership, ability to plan and develop an organization or personnel, as well as graduate and undergraduate teaching, and the ability to interact and cooperate in research with the surrounding society. Priority will also be focused on the candidate’s personal suitability as well as plan to initiate own research group and interact with the ongoing research at the University of Gothenburg.
